Electricity

AP Environmental Science Group Project

Fossil Fuel Electricity Generation & Environmental Impact

Project Title:                                                             Team Name:

Include:

Your names

Date

·       “What would happen if electricity disappeared for just 24 hours?”

·       Why does electricity matter?

·       Provide an interesting fact about electricity

·       Find images of the earth at night and other examples of night time and electricity use

·       What fossil fuels are used to produce electricity?  What major fossil fuel is not used to produce electricity and what is it mainly used for?

·       Fully explain how large-scale electricity is produced.  Include pictures.  (hint there are multiple ways)

·       Examine and explain in detail the types of pollution electricity generation creates

o   Think air, water, solid waste

·       Examine and explain what resources must be “collected” to produce the electricity and the environmental impacts of each.  Does the collection of these materials impact any one group more than others?  (it may vary on the resource being collected)

·       Examine and explain the impacts on ecosystems and biodiversity of electricity generation.

·       What are the advantages of using fossil fuels to produce electricity?

·       What are the disadvantages of using fossil fuels to produce electricity?

·       Once the electricity is produced how do we get it?  What has to happen to the electricity for it to travel long distances and is there any disadvantage to having power generated a long way from where it is used.  Show me some math.

·       Fun Slide: If Our Group Was a Shoe 👟. If your group had to all wear the same shoe everyday, the only exception is if you need a specialty shoe for an activity, what shoe would your group pick.  Provide a picture.
