Parasitism
Herbivory
Mutualism
Commensalism
Trophic level
Food web
Food chain
Keystone species
Resistance
Resilience
Succession
Primary succession
Secondary secession

GOALS
  • Recognize the major types of species interactions, such as competition, predation, parasitism, and mutualism
  • Evaluate how feeding relationships and energy flow can be conceptualized in trophic levels and food webs
  • Assess the roles of keystone species
  • Understand the process of succession, and the debate over the nature of communities
  • Perceive the potential impacts of invasive species in communities
  • Recognize the goals and methods of ecological restoration
  • Describe the terrestrial biomes of the world

Antibiotic Resistance Articles DUE TUESDAY

Read the following articles

Swine and superbugs
Antibiotic Fact Sheet
Antibiotic resistance organic food
Meat industry Defends Antibiotics Use
A growing problem
Antibiotic use

1. Write a summary paragraph  for each article.
2. Write a paragraph to explain what antibiotic resistance is.
3. Write a paragraph and draw a picture to explain how antibiotic resistance happens.
4. Write a paragraph explaining why antibiotic resistance is a concern.  Include a brief history of antibiotics, life before antibiotics, and life after antibiotics.
5. Write a paragraph summarizing where you fall on the use of antibiotic use in farm animals.  Be sure to provide reasons and evidence supporting your stance.
6.  You are the head of the FDA and in charge of policy regarding antibiotic use.  Write a policy that takes into account public health as you understand it and the concerns of business and why you wrote it the way you did (ie justify your position).  Remember though that the FDA's primary charge is the protection of human health.

Key ideas
  • Explain the process of natural selection and cite evidence for this process
  • Describe ways in which evolution results in biodiversity
  • Discuss reasons for species extinction and mass extinction events
  • Compare the adaptability of specialists vs. generalists
  • List levels of ecological organization – population, community and ecosystem
  • Outline the characteristics of populations that help predict population growth
  • Describe how logistic growth, carrying capacity, limiting factors, birth/death rates affect population ecology
  • Identify efforts and challenges involved in the conservation of biodiversity.

Power Lab

Weight = your weight (lbs.) / 2.2 (Kg)
Height = 4.3 m
Time = take your average for walking and your average for running
Gravity = 9.81 m/s2
Work (joules) = mass (kg) * gravity (9.81 m/s2) * 4.3 m
Power (watts) = work / time
